Building muscle

Ok so Sarge (the pony) is in pretty good shape but his neck is a little "upside down" as far as his muscling...which is a shame because when he does walk with it down, got his form is beautiful... and yes i'm going to take some pictures today if the weather stays nice! His topline needs some muscle too, I'm not sure how he's been ridden so much without building it but he's not skinny and he's got a pretty well built bum... just the rest needs work. Short of running him around in circles forever, anyone know of excercises for that? I think I remember someone say something about hills for topline... walking or trotting or cantering?

I know EXACTLY how he got ridden so much without developing his topline. He was a camp horse that got ridden by people who held their reins wrong and didn't have a good seat. That not only NOT develops the right muscles, it develops all the wrong ones. I have a friend that rides with her hands way up, and her horses are so ewenecked and hollowbacked that you can't believe it. She wants to do reining and can't figure out why she isn't winning and why all the trainers at the shows make such fun of her and her horse. You can't tell her anything, either. ; )

All you need to do to correct it is just ride him in the correct frame. It will take some time for his muscles to develop, just like with ours, but eventually he will be nice and muscled along the top. If you know how to lunge him with side reins or running reins (I prefer these to side reins), you can hasten the process, but be careful as you can make a horse sore if you overuse them.

Hills will probably help with his butt and back, but you say his butt doesn't need any work! Jumping (lunge him over them if you don't care to ride over jumps) will also help. The jumps don't have to be big (mine only go to about 2 feet, and I generally have them much lower). At least that's what my vet told me to do to strengthen a horse's back and butt.

Thanks for the tips! I haven't tried lunging him yet, might give it a go tomorrow night. I've used sidereins before in lessons so I may give them a try... but its hard because he's "fit" so he can go... we trotted for nearly an hour tonight before I could get him to walk with his head down!!! SO even though I'm riding "correctly" he still keeps his head all up and back and we're not getting much progress because... well by the time we're done trotting I'm tired!!!
I do look at it like this though... I won't need a buy a gym membership! Its like he ate the energizer bunny or something he just wants to GO GO GO! We're half halting every 5 seconds just to walk... and I'm not squeezing or doing any of my tensing things to keep him going he just goes no matter how jelly like I get or stop my hips and sit way back he just bops me around like a sack of potatoes. Although I did practice a little sitting trot and got a few strides at a time out of it.
